NASC holds Bilateral Academic Symposium on The Strategies for The Aging Society in China and Japan

From September 2nd to 5th, The Strategies for The Aging Society in China and Japan was held at Jilin University. The symposium was co-hosted by Northeast Asian Studies College, Center for Northeast Asian Studies, Center for China’s Population Aging and Economic and Social Development Studies, Jilin University and Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan. Over twenty scholars from Jilin University and School of Humanities, Kwansei Gakuin University attended this event.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Vice Dean Wang Yanjun. Dean Yu Xiao from Northeast Asian Studies College and Director Owa Mie from School of Humanities gave opening speeches.

There were three topics for this symposium, “Population Aging and Social Security”, “Population Aging and Health Nursing”, “Population Aging and Comprehensive Social Policies”. The scholars from China and Japan gave keynote speeches on a wide range of topics including the process and characteristics of the population aging in China and Japan, the social security systems in China and Japan, the health status of the aged people, the long term nursing security system of China and Japan, and the countermeasures for the aging society. The scholars exchanged ideas by in-depth discussions.

Population aging is a critical social issue that both China and Japan face with. Japan is one of the most aged countries in the world and has accumulated precious experience in coping with population aging. Holding this symposium has great significance on China coping with population aging issue and building an aged society with Chinese characteristics. The symposium further enhanced the academic relationship between NASC and the scholars from Kwansei Gakuin University, and paved the way for in-depth collaborated research in the future between the two sides.
